You can rest now. You do not have to perform tonight. You do not have to be helpful. You do not have to be easy. You do not have to be the strong one, the agreeable one, the one who handles things, the one everyone counts on. For the next four hours, nothing is being asked of you. You are not on. You are not scanning for someone else's needs. You are not adjusting yourself to fit the room. You can just exist. Notice what that feels like. The strangeness of it. Maybe the discomfort. Maybe a small ache of relief in your chest that has nowhere to go. Because for someone whose whole nervous system has been organized around other people's reactions, being told to rest can feel almost foreign. Hear me clearly. You did not become this way because something is wrong with you. You became this way because somewhere very early, being yourself was not safe. Your nervous system learned the fawn response. The fourth survival strategy, alongside fight, flight, and freeze. The one that says, when faced with potential threat, "I will make myself useful, agreeable, and pleasing, and that will keep me safe." It worked. When you were small, it kept you safe. It got you through. But what kept you safe as a child is now exhausting you as an adult. The fawn response fires automatically, in situations where there is no threat at all. It happens beneath your awareness, before your conscious mind has any say. That is why willpower has not worked. You cannot decide to stop doing something that fires before deciding is even possible. You can only retrain the system underneath. For the next four hours you will not be lectured. You will not be shamed. You will be guided gently into the deeply relaxed state where your subconscious opens, and carefully crafted affirmations will begin to reach the place where the fawn response actually lives.
