About

The Bride of Frankenstein to House of Wax to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to The Brood-horror is a beloved and multifaceted genre, with no two classics truly alike. And almost all of them-great and not-so-great-inspire the kind of passion that only cult films truly reach. In this collection of 33 essays drawn from his revered Cult Movies series, cult film specialist Danny Peary examines, dissects, defends, and exalts horror films from his unique and engaging perspective. His writing is a cornerstone of the cult film culture that continues to flourish today. New to this ebook series are Danny Peary's cult movie checklists for each genre. Every horror fan will walk away with newly discovered gems to watch, and a newfound appreciation of his or her favorites. Danny Peary is an American film critic and sportswriter. His film writing has been published in Focus on Film, Newsday, Film and Filming, The Philadelphia Bulletin, Movieline, Cineaste, Video Times/Video Movies, The New York Daily News, The Boston Globe, Soho News, Timessquare.com, brinkzine.com, The Sag Harbor Express, and FilmInk. He also authored the highly influential three-volume Cult Movies series, Guide for the Film Fanatic, and Alternate Oscars. Additionally, he is the writer-researcher on the long-running national sports interview television program The Tim McCarver Show, and has written three books with McCarver. He collaborated with Ralph Kiner on his autobiography, Baseball Forever, and coauthored Roger Maris: Baseball's Reluctant Hero and Gil Hodges: The Brooklyn Bums, The Miracle Mets and the Extraordinary Life of a Baseball Legend. He has recently collaborated with Olympic gold medalist and cancer survivor Shannon Miller on her memoir, It's Not About Perfect. Praise for the Cult Movies series:

"Danny Peary pretty much coined the term 'cult movies.'" -Edgar Wright, director

"He treats each film like a surprising and astonishing blind date that lights up your eyes." -Philadelphia Inquirer

"Delightfully readable, perceptive, and offbeat-and so much fun, the Cult Movie books are a great escape into Danny Peary's wonderland of weird taste." -Los Angeles Times

"Danny Peary, a marvelous writer with a droll sense of humor and a fluid style, has written Cult Movies, the definitive book on these curious classics." -The Boston Globe

"With a fine sensitivity to plot and character, and a true movie maniac's attention to detail, Peary romps happily through film history. . . . Peary is a very smooth writer; he's full of unexpected insights and fascinating tidbits." -Cineaste

"Virtually impossible to put down, crammed with all sorts of obscure information, offbeat interpretations and criticism. Peary not only makes us want to catch and enjoy obscure, underrated gems . . . but also offers new insight into old favorites . . . a book for both the fan and the serious student." -Publishers Weekly

"[Peary] rescues from undeserved oblivion a number of real gems, adds to the celebration of several acknowledged masterpieces, comments enticingly on some seldom shown oddities, and debunks the inflated reputation of a few others . . . reading [his] book is like spending a couple of hours with some good old friends." -Film Quarterly

"The author has a finely tuned appreciation for his subject and projects an eagerness to awaken the film cultist in each of us." -Anthony Perkins, actor/director

"An enjoyable work that can be read straight through or at a slow savor." -Films in Review

"Wild bunches of film freaks would brave the badlands of a forbidden planet for a compendium like this. . . . Here's a performance that will help you trash a hard day's night or two." -Playboy
