What else could I do? I defeated my first monster by age eleven. I did what it took to get safe, buried that trauma and I kept going. I did not know that the terror I'd escaped, planted a bomb in my nervous system. How could I know? This is the true story of how I found myself trapped in a medical mystery, with the answers to my fate buried in my own mind. It's the true story of how I went to the desert with a death sentence, and came home a cyborg.This is my story, but it's also a gen X story. We are the one generation who started out on dirt roads and are now navigating the information superhighway… and the apocalypse. We are the generation who have faced down our monsters since the moment we found our voices and we will keep shouting until the monsters are silenced. I hope you find some of your stories in mine… and a little magic. That's the only way any of us are going to break the cycles that have tried to break us, and that is the work we are here to do. I grew up reading novels like The Rats of Nimh, Momo, and My Side of the Mountain. My books are inspired by these tales that stretch the imagination, push us outside our comfort zone, and take us on a journey that is more than just miles.

I'm an anthropologist, writer and mother living in the misty hills of the oregon coast where I care for abandoned animals, spend many days rock hounding, and grow three beautiful children. Having seen the evils of humans from a young age, I learned to climb into books and out of my own skin. I write for the young people who understand life is hard and curling up with a good book can tend deep wounds. May these stories provide escape and solace to the reader.
