About
Grow Food NOT Lawns is not a gardening manual. It is a personal story about loss, responsibility, and choosing to stay healthy for the people who depend on you.
I'm Jermaine Jefferson, a husband, father of four, and the creator of the GrowFitFL YouTube channel. Before any of that, I was a man shaken by grief. In one year, I lost four close family members, including my father. The losses came fast and forced me to face a hard truth. If I didn't take control of my health, I wouldn't be here long enough for my children.
I didn't plan to write a book. I'm not a professional writer. This came together slowly, written in my backyard with a notebook and pen while working through grief and trying to make sense of it all. It was written because it needed to be, not because I wanted to be an author.
This is not a step by step gardening guide. If you're looking for planting tutorials, variety recommendations, or hands on demonstrations, that content lives on the GrowFitFL YouTube channel.
This book focuses on why growing your own food matters. It explores the connection between health, resilience, and taking responsibility for what feeds your family. It is the story of stepping away from burnout and finding strength in food, routine, and building something real at home.
This revised and updated edition reflects lessons learned since the original release, with expanded reflections shaped by experience, loss, and growth.
I wrote this out of love for my community and the hope that my imperfect journey encourages you to begin your own.
Start where you are. Start small. Start with one seed.
