She is the cofounder, with the photographer Jason Fulford, of J&L Books, an internationally distributed not-for-profit imprint specializing in art and photography books. Shapton is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. She grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
