"At the end of the Second World War in 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally. This had a huge impact on Korea, as the country located on the Korean peninsula became a Japanese colony in 1910. So, the question was how the victorious countries USA and Russia would deal with Korea. Even when the end of the war was foreseeable, the two great powers made a decision. They divided Korea into North and South and both accepted that this division would be temporary. The dividing line ran along the 38th Parallel.
