A collection of three rural mystery and supernatural stories set in mountainous villages. The first story, "The Cry of the Night Baby," follows Shou Xinming as he walks along a mountain path at night and hears the eerie sound of a baby crying coming from the hills. The second story, "The Spirit of the Coffin," tells of three mourners who kept vigil all night, only to discover the next day that the coffin lid had mysteriously vanished; The third story, "The Village of the Dead," tells of three unfilial descendants who conspire to kill their father and bury him beneath a paulownia tree, only to have the deceased return home that very night.
