The conflicts took place simultaneously with the American Civil War, and it was thus that rumors of the Confederacy joining with the Native American tribes in hindering the expansion of the United States are present. Despite its title, this book is not entirely about the skirmishes fought: descriptions of the land, the fledgling frontier society of the 'Wild West' era, and members of the native tribes are likewise included.
Eugene Ware was already well into maturity when he adapted these recollections from a diary he jotted notes. Later in life, he would enjoy prominence as a local Kansas tradesman and politician. He was also a poet whose verse was well-received and quite acclaimed in his locality.
