In 1959, a South African Native Commissioner under police escort travelled to Paarl, a small, multi-racial community outside Cape Town to present banning orders to Elizabeth Mafeking-a recognized African women's leader and trade union president. The directive instructed the married mother of eleven to leave all but one of her children-a nursing infant-behind in Paarl and submit to a banning order that would send her more than 600 miles away from her home of 22 years.
