When she died, Emily Dickinson left behind hundreds of texts scribbled on scraps of paper. She also left behind three formidable women: her steadfast sister, Lavinia; her brother's ambitious mistress, Mabel Loomis Todd; and his grief-stricken wife, Susan Gilbert Dickinson.
