About

No matter what subject you teach, these proverbs will bring fun to your classes while giving students the joy of discovering timeless wisdom. Drawn from many cultures, religions, and ethnic groups, they have been carefully selected for classroom use. While many proverb books contain thousands, some weak or irrelevant, this collection saves you the hours of searching. Each proverb here has been tested and proven to enrich lessons. I have used them for years, and based on students' enthusiastic responses, included only the most engaging ones. At the start of each school year, I introduced proverbs by explaining that each has both a simple and a deeper meaning, the latter being its true wisdom. The activity takes just a few minutes: a proverb on the board greets students as they enter, sparking comical interpretations before class begins. Those brief moments of discussion energize students and prepare them for the day's lesson. Students' creativity is often remarkable. When given the Irish proverb "Continual cheerfulness is a sign of wisdom," one student offered, "Continual goofiness is a sign of eighth grade." Another, responding to "Everyone pushes a falling fence" (Chinese), wrote, "Prisons are for fencing fallen pushers." Their wit and insight made every class memorable. Students eagerly wrote down the proverbs without being asked. They wanted to keep both the sayings and the fun that came with them. Each page of this book features two proverbs with space for you to record your own students' interpretations. Whether you teach children, teens, or adults, it is fascinating to see how different age groups find meaning and humor in these sayings. Some proverbs are serious, others playful, but all off er value. Enjoy the experience ahead!
