In the Old Testament, we read how Gehazi, the servant of the prophet Elisha, faced this very dilemma. A bounty had been put on Elisha's head, and an army was now surrounding them. Gehazi was frantic. "Oh no, my lord!" he cried. "What shall we do?" (2 Kings 6:15).
"Don't be afraid," Elisha calmly answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them" (verse 16). Gehazi must have wondered if his master had lost his mind. They had maybe five minutes before the soldiers reached them yet here was Elisha practically singing the lyrics to "It's a Small World" and pretending everything was going to be all right. But then the prophet prayed, "Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see" (verse 17). And with this, Gehazi suddenly saw what his master was seeing: a glorious, greater, and far more powerful army of the Lord surrounding the enemy invaders. When it comes to the trials and crises in our lives, we need to see the reality of our situation with the same "spiritual eyes" as Elisha possessed. What we perceive is not all that is theer. .there are unseen things, spiritual things, eternal things. As the apostle Paul put it, "So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever" (2 Corinthians 4:18 nlt). As we learn to perceive our world through the lens of faith, we gain the strength to do the impossible.
