The Monster at the Bottom of the Sea

The Monster at the Bottom of the Sea is the story of Kai - a twelve-year-old mermaid who can't sing, can't shimmer, and would rather dig in the seafloor than twirl with the rest of her pod. Her only real friend is Gloop: a giant, furry, bug-eyed creature from the forbidden Deep Trench who collects shipwreck junk and just wants someone to play catch with. When a ghost pirate named Siltbeard begins poisoning the coral reef, the elders declare that only a monster can stop him - and Kai realizes the prophecy isn't pointing at something scary. It's pointing at Gloop. Now she must convince her whole city that the real monster isn't the fuzzy one from the deep - it's the pirate wearing pretty shells while destroying their home.
