Ida Lupino began her career as just another starlet in Hollywood, but through talent and perseverance gravitated toward more serious roles in such hard-boiled films as High Sierra and On Dangerous Ground. Feeling constrained by the studio system, she co-founded an independent production company and became a director, blending her penchant for film noir with taboo topics such as unwed motherhood, sexual assault, and bigamy. Gentlemen & Miss Lupino combines interviews and rare film clips to document Lupino's career, and illuminate how she maintained her independence within the increasingly factory-like environment of Hollywood.
