Bees are an extensive group of insects. Most of them live solitary lives. They rear their offspring in holes in wood, soil or in the dry stalks of reed or straw. They are important pollinators of flowering plants. They are found everywhere except in polluted areas. There are several hundred species that live solitary lives, but there is one bee species that lives in large communities. This is the Honey Bee.

EXTRACT
Bats are the only mammals capable of sustained flight. Their front legs are modified into skin flaps which they use to fly – as well as birds can with their wings. The bats that live in Europe feed on insects, which they catch in flight. Due to their nocturnal activity, they help to regulate the number of night insects, which might otherwise multiply beyond control. Bats find their way using echo-location. They emit high-pitched calls that the human ear cannot detect, and the echo helps them to locate their insect prey. They also have good eyesight.

Come and discover the wonderful life of birds! Learn about their environment, their physical features, what they eat and much more!
The "How they live" collection is a must-have for children and other members of the family who are eager to learn about nature and animals while having fun.
EXTRACT
Birds are often short of food in winter; you can help them by providing food. This is a good way to get to know birds that do not normally come close to your home. Start putting out food at the onset of cold weather — snow or frost and continue until springtime. If you stop the feeding, the birds may become confused: they need a reliable source of food in winter conditions to avoid the risk of starvation. The bird feeder should be placed at least 1.5 metres high. A pole or a windowsill work best, but a branch will also do. There should be a hedge or bush nearby, where birds can seek refuge from danger, such as a sparrowhawk attack. The bird feeder should be large enough to prevent conflicts between different types of birds; this will also reduce the chance of infectious diseases being transmitted.

The "How they live" collection is a must-have for children and other members of the family who are eager to learn about nature and animals while having fun.
EXTRACT
Owls are adapted perfectly to night life. The numerous light-sensitive cells in the retina of their eye allow them to see in the dark. Unlike most birds, their eyes are positioned on the front – rather than the side – of the head, which helps them to assess distances and to be successful at hunting. Their inability to move their eyes in the sockets is compensated by their ability to rotate their head round 270 degrees. Owls also have excellent hearing, helped by their facial feathers, which direct sound into their ears. They fly silently, aided by their soft plumage and the serrated edges of the flight feathers, which smooth the flow of air during flight. Being able to fly silently is very helpful to owls when hunting, as they can surprise their prey. Most owls hunt small rodents, amphibians and reptiles; smaller species of owl also hunt insects on the ground; the large Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) can capture hedgehogs, rabbits and even young deer.

Come and discover the wonderful life of the birds! Learn about their environment, their physical features, what they eat and much more!
"Little clever clogs" collection is a must-have for children and other members of the family who are eager to learn about the natural and animal world while having fun.
There are more than 9,000 species of bird in the world. Almost all can fly, and they do so better than any man-made flying machine, because of their forelimbs, which have evolved into wings with feathers. Birds are the only animal group to have feathers, which also give them protection from the elements. Birds have beaks, which they use for feeding. They also use their beaks to preen their feathers, to help them climb, to defend themselves and to attack prey.

The "How they live" collection is a must-have for children and other members of the family who are eager to learn about nature and animals while having fun.
EXTRACT
Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates. They rely more on environmental conditions and less on food to regulate their body temperature than warm-blooded birds and mammals. There are not many reptiles in Europe, compared to the number and variety found in warmer climates. The species which live in Slovenia have adapted to the winter to enable them to survive the cold season. Eleven species of snake live here, of which only three are venomous: the Adder, the Nose-horned Viper and the Asp Viper. These poisonous snakes have heart-shaped heads, stocky bodies with short tails, which are visibly different from the main body, and their eyes have narrow pupils. Non-poisonous snakes have small heads, passing seamlessly into slender bodies, in turn passing into the tail.

Come and discover the wonderful life of rodents! Learn about their environment, their physical features, what they eat and much more!
The "How they live" collection is a must-have for children and other members of the family who are eager to learn about nature and animals while having fun.
EXTRACT
Rodents are a large group of mammals that occur in most parts of the world. They have a single pair of front incisor teeth that grow throughout their lives. Their teeth are covered by solid enamel at the front, with softer dentine behind which get sharpened with use. Slovenia is home to a number of small species of rodents, the biggest of which is the Alpine Marmot, a member of the squirrel family. Many rodents have adapted to living alongside humans, but they often become a nuisance. They are good at finding food, so it comes as no surprise that they cause trouble in food warehouses, our kitchens, and other food-storage areas. They are also attracted to food that can be found in the rubbish we throw away. They may contaminate food with their droppings, and infectious diseases — such as bubonic plague — are transmitted by rat fleas. Mice and rats live successfully in the proximity of man, partly due to the lack of natural predators.

Amongst the animal species that we encounter in everyday life, there are some that can give us an unpleasant shock or even endanger our health. For most people, a bee sting is an unwelcome experience, causing short-term pain and swelling. But if you are allergic to bee venom, the sting can be fatal without medical help. The same applies to the stings of other insects, especially wasps

Birds that nest in holes in trees are often in trouble nowadays when they have to find a place to take care of their young. There are fewer hollow trees in forests, and orchards with old varieties of fruit trees — in which a hollow could always be found - are also on the decline. Birds are increasingly forced to nest in unsuitable nooks and crannies, where their young are sooner or later doomed to perish or to move elsewhere to find a more appropriate place for nesting. The issue can be resolved by providing them with a nest box.

Caterpillars are the larvae of butterflies and moths. They represent only one of the four stages of a butterfly's metamorphosis (egg—larva—pupa—butterfly). Since their appearance in no way resembles adult butterflies which have wings, many people do not make the connection between the two, mistakenly thinking that they are completely different animals.
