A young and frustrated Börje Salming feels left behind and lost in his hometown of Kiruna. His older brother Stig is a hockey-star in Brynäs, Gävle, and Börje is desperate to prove himself and follow his brother's footsteps, especially after losing his job.

Börje achieves significant success with Brynäs, moves into his own place, gets drafted to play for the National team, and falls in love with Margitta. Suddenly, a Canadian hockey scout turns everything upside down, and Börje is forced to make a life-altering decision.

New home, new country, new team, what could possibly go wrong?
It soon becomes apparent that there is a massive language barrier for Börje to overcome. The hot-headed owner of the Maple Leafs, Harold Ballard is questioning if signing the Europeans was a bad investment.

Börje's rise to stardom in Toronto and the Maple Leafs is evident, and with a second baby on the way, he is juggling family life and career. Stig visits and questions Börje and the team's efforts on the ice. Meanwhile, Margitta begins to question whether her life in Toronto will only be limited to being a hockey wife.

Börje is severely hurt during a game, Margitta fears for his life and can no longer stand by and watch her husband suffer. Ballard has hired a new coach, trading players left and right and pushing the players past their breaking points. Margitta's hard work culminates in a grand opening for her clothing brand-an event where her husband is nowhere to be found.

The year is 1986, and Börje celebrates his 35th birthday. Still on top of his game and despite being approached by other teams, he is staying true and determined to bring home the Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs. Being 35 also brings back painful memories of his father from the past that he can no longer escape.
